Ingredients:
- 2 Tablespoons, Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 2 Ounces, Red Food Coloring (optional)
- 1 Cup, Butter Milk
- 1 Teaspoon, Salt
- 1 Teaspoon, Vanilla
- 1/2 Cup, Shortening
- 1-1/2 Cup, White Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- 2-1/2 Cups, All-Purpose Flour (Sifted)
- 1-1/2 Teaspoon, Baking Soda
- 1 Teaspoon White Vinegar
Important Note: Make sure everything is at Room Temperature.. this helps make for a moist cake.
- Prepare two 9-inch round pans. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- In a Small Bowl
- Blend Cocoa Powder and Food Coloring to a paste
- Set aside.
- In a Small Bowl
- Combine Buttermilk, salt and vanilla
- Set aside.
- In a Large Bowl
- Cream together the Shortening and Sugar until light and fluffy
- Beat in eggs, one at a time
- Stir in the Cocoa Mixture
- Alternate beating in the Buttermilk and Flour, one then the other, try to end with the Flour.
- In a Small Bowl
- Combine Baking Soda and Vinegar (yes, it will fizz up)
- Mix Vinegar into Batter
Pour batter into your prepared pans and bake for, at least, 20 minutes.. or until a toothpick comes out clean. Also makes good Cupcakes.
