Red Velvet Cake

Red Velvet


  • 2 Tablespoons, Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 Ounces, Red Food Coloring (optional)
  • 1 Cup, Butter Milk
  • 1 Teaspoon, Salt
  • 1 Teaspoon, Vanilla
  • 1/2 Cup, Shortening
  • 1-1/2 Cup, White Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2-1/2 Cups, All-Purpose Flour (Sifted)
  • 1-1/2 Teaspoon, Baking Soda
  • 1 Teaspoon White Vinegar

Important Note:  Make sure everything is at Room Temperature.. this helps make for a moist cake.

  1. Prepare two 9-inch round pans.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a Small Bowl
    • Blend Cocoa Powder and Food Coloring to a paste
    • Set aside.
  3. In a Small Bowl
    • Combine Buttermilk, salt and vanilla
    • Set aside.
  4. In a Large Bowl
    • Cream together the Shortening and Sugar until light and fluffy
    • Beat in eggs, one at a time
    • Stir in the Cocoa Mixture
    • Alternate beating in the Buttermilk and Flour, one then the other, try to end with the Flour.
  5. In a Small Bowl
    • Combine Baking Soda and Vinegar (yes, it will fizz up)
  6. Mix Vinegar into Batter

Pour batter into your prepared pans and bake for, at least, 20 minutes.. or until a toothpick comes out clean.  Also makes good Cupcakes.
