Wrestlemaniac

Today, I watched “Wrestlemaniac”… I was majorly disappointed. Here’s my take (spoilers, duh)

First off, I’ll say that the first time I saw the DVD cover, Blockbuster was still in business.

On their way to Caba San Lucas, the cast and crew of a low-budget film get lost and come upon “La Sangre De Dios”, a ghost town with a spine-tingling legend about an insane Mexican wrestler. The leader of the pack and first time director, Alphonse, likes the town’s gritty appearance and decides it would be the perfect setting for his film. The crew positions the camera and snaps on the lights. When Alphonse yells “Action!”, it arouses the famous and now insane Luchador, “El Mascarado” (The Masked Man), who begins a game of his own. One by one, the cast and crew are snatched, beaten and dragged to a bloody death. The few left alive must figure out how to beat the wrestler at his own deadly game, or die trying.

Now, the entire reason for me wanting to see this movie was the name “Rey Mysterio” on the cover. Of course, now I realize that it didn’t say “Jr” after it. That’s right.. this movie features “Rey Misterio SR.” – the real life Uncle of the (now former) WWE Superstar.. who, in his own right, is a big name in Mexican Luca-Libre. If memory serves me correctly, Rey Jr had to wrestle and defeat his uncle in order to earn the name “Mysterio” for his career.

The acting was bad. The story, not great.. but, not horrible. And worst of all.. No Wrestling?? That’s right, in a horror movie about a psycho wrestler.. there’s no wrestling.. Pacing was pretty good, I didn’t notice any long periods of boredom. I just feel that this could have been done much better.
