Batman vs Superman

BumpMapFrame

Fearing that the actions of Superman are left unchecked, Batman takes on the Man of Steel, while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs.

I just returned from seeing Batman V Superman. First, let’s do the non-spoiler stuff…

  • I think Ben Affleck did a good job as old-man Batman. Grizzled, seasoned and tired of everyone’s shit.
  • I’m still not 100% on Henry Cavill as Superman.. actually I take that back, it’s his portrayal of Superman’s alter-ego, Clark, that bother’s me.. I know the “alter ego” thing is actually a super-hero (or Meta) trait in the DC Universe, but he’s not mild or meek as Clark at all.
  • I dig Jeremy Irons as our new Alfred, well done.
  • The portrayal of Wonder-Woman is nicely done by Gal Gadot
  • I liked the story and direction.
  • However, I did not buy Jesse Eisenberg’s performance as Lex Luthor

I can, without hesitation, advise my friends to go see this movie. Go!

Now, for some spoiler stuff.. so SPOILERS HO!!

Jesse Eisenberg seemed more like a replacement Joker, than Lex Luthor.. very manic, clearly out of his mind. Had he been playing Joker, it would have been OK (not great, but OK) – but as a portrayal of Lex? No, it just didn’t work. I’ve always thought of Lex as being very serious and calculating, in control. “Bruce Wayne meets Clark Kent, I just love bringing people together”. This is a stupid line. Does he know who their alters are? If not, why does he seem so excited to get them together?

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman? I thought she was good in the role, but why is she here in the first place? Lex has an old photo of WW from 1918 World War 1 and she wants that photo back. Hell, that’s like Beyonce’s manager saying that they want unflattering photos of the diva removed from the internet. It just ain’t gonna happen, and it’s a ridiculous premise just to shoe-horn her into this story. She could have easily claimed that it’s not her.. Hell, why would anyone think that it was? Why not give her a movie of her own and tie in a “Justice League” formation movie down the line?

Meta Humans.. The Lexcorp files on the Meta Humans could have been a nice after-credits scene, it only lasted a few moments and really didn’t effect the story. Sure, it introduced the rest of the Justice League, but that could have waited.

The Joke’s On You. For those who don’t know.. that costume hanging in the “Bat Cave” with the words “Ha Ha, The Joke’s On You, Batman!” spray painted across the chest, was the costume of Jason Todd. The 2nd “Robin”, who was beaten to death by the Joker, in the comic “A Death in the Family”.

All and all, I did like this movie and recommend it for the big screen!

BTW – Technically, Batman Won
