2000 years from now, humans are nearly exterminated by titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind
I know what you’re thinking.. “Jethal, why are you reviewing an Anime on your Horror Movie site?” Because this is what occupied my weekend.. and it’s about giants who rip people in half and eat them.. and if that’s not horror, I don’t know what is.
Now, to start, I’ll say that I have not read the Manga, so I have no reference of the source material to compare it to. Also, I’m not what you’d call a huge anime guy. Sure, I have seen: Akira, Dominion:Tank Police, and a few others on Netflix but I’m not an anime expert. So, I just spent the last 11+ hours watching this series, and I have to say it’s pretty good. A little slow at times, but not bad.
Of course, there are a few questions that are unanswered, so far..
- Where did the Titans come from?
- What is the history of the Wall?
- If we know men built the Wall, why is there a crazy sect claiming that it was put there by the gods?
- Is Armin a boy or a girl?
These are questions we need to know..
Here is what we DO know (Spoilers!!)
- The Titans are Giants who appeared suddenly, approximately 107 years ago (show time line).
- The Titans eat humans.. and only humans.. but, it doesn’t seem to be for nourishment.
- Once a Titan has their fill of Human flesh.. they vomit us out.
- The Titans have devoured Humanity almost to the point of extinction.
- Titans are typically slow and dumb as a sack of hammers, but there are “Variants” which can be quick, leap, or have minimal problem solving
- The Remaining humans live in one area, surrounded by a three tiered wall system
- Each wall is 50 meters high
- Although I have not read info on it.. the areas within the three walls seem to be class separated
- Maria – Outer ring (lower class)
- Rose – Middle ring (middle class)
- Sina – Central ring (the rich / ruling class)
- Armin is a boy…
The made a point to mention during one of the early episodes, that the Titans kill before eating. In the anime, there are (at least) 2 humans who can transform into Titans (Eren and Annie).. one of these people, we know for sure, was swallowed whole, was Eren and he emerged with the ability to become a Titan.. that raises the question; is that how Annie gained that ability as well? And is that why the Titans try to kill first?
- Also, the Titans have no genitalia or noticeable reproductive organs.. how do they reproduce? they have to come from somewhere..
OK, thats all I’m getting into at this point. I can definitely see why this is the most popular anime at this time.. I can’t wait for Netflix to get season 2.
